THE HISTORY OF PURI ANYAR KERAMBITAN
A PURI OF THE XVII CENTURY

OM AWIGNAM ASTU, MANGDA TAN KNENG RAJA PINULUH
APOLOGIZE ME LORD FOR TELLING HISTORY OF OUR ANCESTORS

With the surrender of the old Balinese Kingdom “Bedulu” to the Majapahit (Java) Empire, the Island of Bali then was ruled by the Royal Aryas from Majapahit, that was happened during the XIII century.

Bali devided into 8 regions that later-on became 8 Kingdoms. And now became the 8 regencies of Bali Province. One of the 8 Kingdoms was the Kingdom of Tabanan, southwest of the Island of Bali.

During the reign of the XII King of Tabanan, named Ida Cokorda Mur Pemade Ratu Singhasana Tabanan, has no child even the King becoming older and older. It’s happened during the XVI century.

The King was so sad. The King then took a solemns vow, should be he blessed with sons the first born would be the future King.

In time, the King was blessed with a son named Sira Arya Ngurah Sekar, who was bom from a mother of a low caste (”pendawing”) named Mekel Sekar, raised as a King of the XIII of Tabanan Kingdom with the name of Ida Cokorda Di Sekar. It’s in accordance with the promise of his father.

Soon afterwards the King was blessed again with the birth of another son who was bom from His Princess Gusti Ayu Wayan Gede (“Padmi”). He was certainly a crowned Prince of the Kingdom of Tabanan, named Sira Arya Ngurah Gde. (The time came, the old King passed away peacefully)

As a crowned Prince but not official positions and also by other reasons, Sira Arya Ngurah Gde then set out a journey without known by his brother, the King, to the northern slope of the mountains Batukaru and arrived at the village of Banjar (near the city of Singaraja now), stayed at the house-compound of a sacred Priest for months, till some day a group of researchers of his brother, the King, found him there.

Sira Arya Ngurah Gde didn’t like to return home, unless his brother to set for him an area at the region of Tabanan. The King was happy then gave him half of Tabanan Kingdom for his own and even built for him a Palace that mostly similar with the Palace of the King.

So, Sira Arya Ngurah Gde went to the southwest of Bali, in accordance with the suggestions and advices of the sacred Priest, among other things : when smoke arose from the earth he had to stop and stayed there; Sira Arya Ngurah Gde then found a “Rawit” area (“Rawit”) means beautiful), suddenly seen a big of arisen smoke from the earth, where then he decided to stop and stayed at that “Rawit” area (Rawit became KERAWITAN then KERAMBITAN and now becoming the name of the traditional village of Kerambitan). This area is not so far from Tabanan regency.

On his reign SIRARYA NGURAH GDE titled by the name of : COKORDA DIBANJAR, at the new region called Kerambitan, his Palace called PURI GDE KERAMBITAN, ruled wisely, loved by the people - peaceful and safe.

THE NEXT GENERATION, THE CROWN PRINCE SIRARYA NGURAH MADE DANGIN CALLED BY THE NAME OF COKORDA NGURAH MADE DANGIN BUILT PURI ANYAR KERAMBITAN (PURI = PALACE, ANYAR = NEW)

SO WAS BORN PURI ANYAR KERAMBITAN AS A NEW PALACE OF THE XVII CENTURY AT THE VILLAGE OF KERAMBITAN.

PURI ANYAR KERAMBITAN OPEN IT’S KORI AGUNG
FOR HONOURABLE GUESTS & TOURIST VISIT IN JULY 4th, 1967.

Since the new law of Land Reform applied in the Republic of Indonesia in 1961, Bali as one of the 27 Provinces accepted that new law with no exception.

“Land Reform” is a law or rule to limit the possession of lands of a family (one family may have freehold title of ownership of 5 Ha. only)

So Puri Anyar Kerambitan that contolled by ownership of ± 300 Ha. of land had to redistributed by the government of Indonesia to villagers.

Since the year of 1961, Puri Anyar Kerambitan and other Puris in the Island of Bali had owned less property and managing less people to work for the Puris.

Therefore the Head of family as the IX generation of Puri Anyar Kerambitan, Anak Agung Ngurah Oka Silagunadha (he prefers to be called just Bapak Oka), got trouble how to preserve and protect the Palace which is to manage and organize so many traditional buildings, ceremony and other difficulties arise. This is due to limited productive land and supporting people. One day on March 1967, Bapak Oka got an inspiration (dream) then he reconstructed the story of the old days of the way of life of his anchestor to host Royal guests. He created then the unique traditional orchestra TEKTEKAN for a royal performance.

So he started to combine the Royal traditional activities and dinner with the unique TEKTEKAN drama in one program called “Royal Reception” or “Cultural Evening”. In the 4th July 1967 he opened the “Kori Agung” of the Puri to welcome visitors for the first time (“Kori Agung” means the main gate of the Palace).

Several months afterwards many visitors and people from abroad come to visit  Puri Anyar Kerambitan with their camera etc. (team from B.B.C. of London, France television, Japan television, Journalists from Europe and others).

Later on many VIPs from the governmental officials such as the assistance of the late King Hussein from Yordan, assistance of the late Prime Minister Fukuda from Japan, Minister & Ambassadors from abroad, Prince Bartil from Sweden, the world class celebrity such as Mick Jagger and family, David Bowie, Super Tramp (musical group ), Jodi Setiawan, WS Rendra, delegation of mayors from Asean Pasific Countries, conference delegations from domestic or abroad, etc.

The program is fully supported by people of the villages around the Palace as well as artists, dancers and orchestra of the villages to join and participate the program.

Hence the people of the villages is back to Puri Anyar Kerambitan as what was intended by the Head of Family of Puri Anyar Kerambitan : Bapak Oka. They both, the villagers and the Puri Family, create a seamless collaboration and synergy to maintain and preserve the atmosphere, the traditions and harmonious relationship bertween the Puri and the vallgers.

Since then Puri Anyar Kerambitan is popular for the tourist visits, cultural events of dinner and royal wedding eventhough the Puri does not control anymore huge land and ricefield.
